The short version. Knight is a coaching app. To coach you, it stores what you tell it: your Oath, your reports, your chats with the coach, and how you're doing (mood, sleep, energy, and heart numbers if you add them). Some of that counts as health information, so we only use it with your clear agreement. Your coach's replies are written by an AI service, Anthropic, which processes your messages to reply and doesn't train its models on them. We never sell your data or use it for adverts. You can ask to see it or delete it at any time.
Who we are
Knight is run by Nicholas Knight, trading as Knight Coaching, a sole trader in the UK. I'm the data controller, which means I'm responsible for your data.

What we collect
- Your account: first name, email address, and your password (stored only as a scrambled hash we can't read).
- Your coaching: your Oath (goals, pledges, your reasons, your usual excuse, your consequence), your daily reports, check-ins, today's win, your chats with the coach, and the coach's notes about you.
- How you're doing: mood, sleep, energy and how heavy life is. If you choose to add them, your heart rate variability (HRV) and resting heart rate.
- The waiting list: if you put your email on the roll from our home page, we keep it only to send you an invite. Ask and we'll remove it.
- Basic usage: when you last used the app, and how much the AI coach was used (to keep costs in check).
We don't use tracking cookies or adverts. One cookie keeps you signed in, and that's all it does.
Health information
Mood, sleep, energy, heart numbers and any health goals or conditions you tell the coach are "special category" data under UK law. We only use them with your explicit consent, which you give when you join. You can withdraw it at any time by asking us to delete your account. Without it, Knight can't coach you, because the coaching is built on how you're actually doing.
Why we use it, and the legal basis
- To provide the coaching you signed up for, including scores, ranks, check-ins and the coach's replies. Legal basis: our agreement with you (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(b)).
- Health information as part of that coaching. Legal basis: your explicit consent (Article 9(2)(a)).
- To keep the service running, secure and affordable, for example checking AI costs and fixing problems. Legal basis: legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f)).
Who else handles it
- Anthropic (the AI behind the coach). Your messages and the relevant coaching data are sent to Anthropic so the coach can reply. Anthropic acts as our processor under its commercial terms and doesn't use API data to train its models. Anthropic is based in the US.
- Render (hosting). The app and its database run on Render's servers in Frankfurt, Germany (EU).
Where data goes outside the UK, it's protected by the safeguards UK law approves, such as the UK's data bridge and adequacy arrangements or the ICO's international data transfer agreement and addendum. We never sell your data or share it with advertisers.
How long we keep it
For as long as you have an account. If you ask us to delete your account, your coaching data is deleted straight away. Backups clear within 30 days. Anthropic keeps API messages only for a short period under its own terms before deleting them.
Your rights
You can ask to see your data, correct it, delete it, get a copy to take elsewhere, object to how it's used, or withdraw your consent. Email info@nicholasmknight.co.uk and I'll respond within one month.
If you're unhappy with how your data is handled, please tell me first. You also have the right to complain to the ICO: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint, or 0303 123 1113.

- Knight is for adults aged 18 and over.
- Knight is a coaching tool, not a medical or mental-health service. If you're struggling, please contact your GP, or Samaritans on 116 123 (free, 24/7).
